JOSEPH, EPHRAIM AND MANASSEH - A

FORESHADOW OF GOD'S AGENDA FOR

JEWS AND GENTILES

By Donald P. Moss

INTRODUCTION

Most bible scholars, teachers and preachers have insight to Joseph as an Old Testament portrayal of Christ. Joseph is a favorite Old Testament character used by all preachers, at one time or another, in preparing sermons concerning Christ and His involvement in believers' lives. But, not many sermons or bible lessons are taught concerning the sons of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh.

Many of Joseph's experiences parallel Jesus' experiences and it's apparent that God used Joseph and the events in his life to foreshadow Jesus' life and mission on the earth. Even though most bible scholars overlook Ephraim and Manasseh's part in the foreshadow of the life of Joseph, they are very important when seeking the whole foreshadow of Christ. Even as Ephraim and Manasseh were adopted as sons by Jacob and counted as co-heirs with Jacob's other sons (including Joseph himself), Jews (Manasseh) and Gentiles (Ephraim) are seen as the sons of God adopted through Christ. Ephraim and Manasseh inclusion in the portrayal of Joseph as an Old Testament type of Christ provides a much greater insight to the New Testament agenda of God for Jew and Gentile.

The apostle Paul, had a great knowledge of Old Testament scriptures. When Paul had his encounter with Jesus and given surpassingly great revelations concerning Christ's agenda for Jews and Gentiles. His knowledge of the Old Testament merged afresh with New Testament facts resulting in a great revelation of God through Christ. Christ chose Paul to reveal to all believer's the mystery of Christ. In Paul's light of the mystery of Christ, the following study of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim is presented.

*********************************

This study will explore Joseph's life and overlay those Old Testament scriptures to New Testament scriptures, revealing God's agenda for Jew and Gentile. The unification of the Jew and Gentile is the primary goal of the gospel era. This is revealed in Ephesians 3: 2-6 - Surely, you have heard about the administration of God's grace that was given to me for you, that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets. This mystery is that - through the gospel - the Gentiles are heirs, together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Paul was so impressed about these surpassingly great revelations of the gospel that Christ had to place a thorn in his flesh to keep him humble and able to teach the gospel to the Jews and Gentiles with a proper spirit and attitude.

2 Corinthians 12:7 - To keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassingly, great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of satan, to torment me.

If Paul's infusion of revelation concerning the gospel impressed him to such a great extent, likewise the church should have the same understanding of the mystery of Christ. The revelation is this - through the church's ministry of the gospel, the Jew and Gentile will be saved and united into one body (the body of Christ) as equal sharers of the covenant promise that God made to Abraham. The promise that Israel (descendants of Abraham) and all peoples on earth (Gentiles) will be blessed. That blessing is the gift of eternal life through Christ Jesus.

NOTE: The following foreshadow and interpretation of scriptures contained in this work is based on the following two biblical presuppositions;

1) "He chose us in him before the creation of the world" - Ephesians 1:4.

2) Ephesians 3:6 - This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together if one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

No other biblical presuppositions are taken into consideration, nor are any needed. These presuppositions are the keys that will open the "Eyes of Your Understanding" .

These presuppositions are God's whole purpose and meaning for the gospel and all that Christ is doing in the earth until God returns to the earth to visit with His creation once again. Therefore, when one reads the gospel from Genesis to Revelation one should see these scriptures as the main theme of the gospel and the foundation for all scripture. For this purpose Christ came to the earth, was crucified, raised from the dead and then sent the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sabbath to establish the ministry of the gospel in the earth, so that Jew and Gentile can be united into one body through faith in the gospel. This is a simple, but profound understanding of God's agenda for the gospel.

God's Intention for the Gospel

God's intention for uniting the Jew and Gentile through the gospel is to reveal His manifold wisdom to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms - Ephesians 3:10-11(NIV) - His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, (11) according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. In the final accounting of God's work in the earth, all spiritual rulers and authorities in the eternal realms of the heavens will have witnessed the victory of life over death, as taught and preached by the church. Through Paul, Christ revealed God's intention for the church - to make known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms the manifold wisdom of God according to His eternal purpose accomplished in Christ Jesus. Through the church's ministry of the gospel, those rulers in the realm of death will bow and acknowledge that Christ is Lord of all!

What do the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms see when the church is a witness of the gospel? They see people, whom the devil is attempting to destroy by reeking havoc in their lives, turn and repent of their sin and give themselves whole heartedly to Christ. They see the in-filling and indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Yet, all they heard was a message of God's love and forgiveness through Christ. They have turned from all that can be seen in the world and given themselves to Christ whom they haven't seen. They see a faith that withstands the all the testing that comes their way. Yet, they see man made lower than the angels who is given authority that is greater than the powers of darkness. Yes, the church is revealing to satan and all his followers the real truth and power of a God breathed life.

Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV) - Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, (10) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (11) and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

God has purposed that any man, who was born and walks in the realm of death, can by simple faith in Christ overcome death and live eternally!

God is teaching a vital lesson to Lucifer (satan) and all the angels who chose to follow him; those who believed Lucifer could exalt himself above the throne of God and establish himself in a position of greater power - Isaiah 14:12-14 (KJV) - How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! (13) For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: (14) I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

The bottom line of that lesson is this, God's love is greater than any power which is based in self-serving rationale. Faith in God is manifested in the soul of man by experiencing God's love for him. This is a faith that will overcome all of satan's attempts to separate him from God and prevent him from having a relationship with God. Faith worketh by love - Galatians 5:6.

Do the events in the lives of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh foreshadow what God is doing between Jew and Gentile during the age of the Gospel? YES! This comparison is so precisely structured that it becomes evident that God had the unity of Jew and Gentile in mind when He orchestrated the events in the lives of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh. This foreshadow validates the intention of God for having created everything in the beginning; He looked to the future time when Christ would come and complete this unification of Jew and Gentile.

A clear revelation of God's plan is revealed when one sees events between Joseph and his brothers paralleling events between Jesus and His brothers. Joseph is the Old Testament type of Christ. Ephraim and Manasseh are symbolic Old Testament representations of the Gentile nations and the nation of Israel.

Chapter 1 - Joseph

A Hebrew study of words used in the Old Testament reveals the artistic characteristic of the Hebrew language, as many great pictures of the Messiah are painted. These are pictures which are played out through historical events, occurring between God and Israel and the rest of the world (Gentile nations). This is the true prophetical aspect of foreshadows, revealing God's agenda. Without changing any of the Hebrew words used in the historical account of Joseph and the words used by Jacob when he blessed Joseph, the story of redemption through Christ Jesus can be told. The Hebrew language validates the prophetic characteristic of God's Word. The implied and figurative use of Hebrew words will reveal Jesus throughout the Old Testament.

Jacob's Favor Over Joseph

The hateful relationship between seventeen year old Joseph and the rest of his older brothers began with Jacob favoring Joseph over his brothers. The bible does not state why Jacob favored Joseph more than his other sons, but his favor is something one should keep in mind when studying the historical account of Joseph. As one sees the unfolding story of Joseph as a metaphorical representation of Christ Jesus, this favor begins to shed light on God's intervention in the life of Joseph for a specific purpose. In the same way as God found favor with David, the youngest of Jesse's sons, and promoted him from being a shepard to anointing him as the King of Israel, God also finds favor with Joseph and promotes him from being a shepard to be the ruler over the land of Egypt. It is apparent that God inspired Jacob to favor Joseph because God used Joseph to prepare a provisional place in Egypt for Jacob and his family during the forthcoming famine.

Animosity between Joseph and his brothers began in the following scripture -

Genesis 37:2 (KJV) - These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

Joseph returned to Jacob after tending the flock and gave Jacob a bad report concerning his brothers who were attending the flock with him. His report concerned the lazy sluggish efforts of his brothers in helping him tend the flock. His bad report slandered his brothers reputation with Jacob and they were bitter with Joseph.

"Report" (Strong's Concordance - Hebrew) - #1681 dibbah (dib-baw'); from #1680 (in the sense of furtive motion); slander.

Use in KJV - defaming, evil report, infamy, slander.

#1680 - dabab (daw-bab'); a primitive root (compare #1679); to move slowly, i.e. glide.

Use in KJV - cause to speak.

#1679 - dobe' (do'-beh); from an unused root (compare #1680) (probably meaning to be sluggish, i.e. restful); quiet.

Jacob's favor with Joseph was not due to his bad report on his brothers' flock tending efforts, but rather was due to being born to Jacob in his old age. Jacob made for Joseph a richly ornamented robe which was an indication to his brothers that Jacob loved him more than any of them. Joseph's brothers developed bitterness with Joseph when Jacob gave him the robe. Their hatred grew more intense when Joseph gave Jacob the bad report.

Genesis 37:3-4 (NIV) - Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him. (4) When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

The relationship between Joseph and his brothers was set in adversity and will continue until the day they enter into Egypt and discover Joseph has been made ruler over the land of Egypt. At that time the brothers will recall Joseph's dreams and realize he spoke the truth, when he said "his sheaf arose upright and their sheaves would bow to his sheaf". Joseph will in fact rule over them during their stay in Egypt.

Joseph's Dream

When Joseph told his brothers and Jacob about the two dreams he had, his brothers were incensed and Jacob did not understand the meaning of the dream.

Genesis 37:5-8 (KJV) - And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. (6) And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: (7) For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. (8) And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

Genesis 37:9-11 (KJV) - And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me. (10) And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? (11) And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

Jacob rebuked Joseph for his dreams of supremacy, but he continued to ponder Joseph's words. Although he did not understand, God would not allow him to forget the words of Joseph. He did not cast off Joseph's dreams as meaningless. Although Jacob did not have understanding, he knew Joseph's words had spiritual significance. Joseph's dream was received by Jacob and his brothers as a statement of supremacy over the family.

The hatred and envy of his brothers will grow until they conspire to eliminate Joseph. Their conspiracy was intent on removing Joseph from the House of Jacob forever.

Genesis 37:18-20 (LJV) - And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. (19) And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. (20) Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

Joseph's Brothers' Change Their Plan

The plan to slay Joseph and cast him into the pit would, of course, place the blood of Joseph's death on their hands before God. So, rather than slay him they sold him to Ishmaelite traders who were headed to Egypt.

Genesis 37:23-28 (KJV) - And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they striped Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; (24) And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. (25) And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmaelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. (26) And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? (27) Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. (28) Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

*********************************************

Before continuing with this study it is prudent to review what has happened to Joseph up to that point. As we review, we will consider Israel's reaction to Jesus when He arrives for the salvation of Israel.

1) Joseph was hated by his brothers.

Jacob's favor of Joseph over his other sons was the basis of the hatred and envy of his brothers.

Foresahadow - Jesus was also favored by God the Father and hated and envied by His brothers.

God's Favor - Hebrews 1:5 (KJV) - For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? In the same way as Jacob favored Joseph over his brothers, God favors Jesus over all His brothers (all Jews).

Brothers' Hatred - John 10:31-33 (NIV) - Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, (32) but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?" (33) "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."

Brothers' Hatred - Matthew 27:17-18 (NIV) - So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?" (18) For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.

Brothers' Hatred - John 15:24 (NIV) - If I had not done among them (Jews) what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. (25) But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: `They hated me without reason.'" (Quoted from Psalms 35:19; 69:4).

2) Joseph's dreams of supremacy over the House of Jacob incensed his family against him and adversity increased.

Foreshadow - When Jesus stated He was the Christ, the Son of God, His Jewish brothers became angry and adversity increased. The Jews judged Him blasphemous - Mark 14:61-64 (KJV) - But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? (62) And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. (63) Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses? (64) Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.

Luke 4:28-29 (KJV) - And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, (29) And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

3) God used dreams to give Joseph a vision of the future. A time when His brothers will bow to HIs supremacy and authority when they arrive in the land of Egypt.

Dreams was use in the Bible many times to warn or direct the prophets of God in fulfilling God's agenda.

Dreams was also a method God used to direct and guide Joseph (husband of Mary) for the protection of Jesus from King Herod's efforts to slay him. Since Jesus was with Joseph and Mary at all times, then Jesus (King of Israel) was led into Egypt like Joseph (ruler of Egypt). Both were led into Egypt through dreams.

Joseph and Mary Into Egypt - Matthew 2:13 (KJV) - And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

Joseph and Mary Out of Egypt - Matthew 2:19-20 (KJV) - But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, (20) Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

The conspiracy of Joseph brothers' was instrumental in Joseph's entry into Egypt. Likewise, the hatred of Herod, king of Israel, also was instrumental in Jesus' entry into Egypt - Matthew 2:12-15 (KJV) - And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. (13) And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. (14) When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: (15) And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt have I called my son."

In the above scripture Matthew, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, sees Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus' entry into Egypt was not only to avoid Jesus' death at the hand of Herod, but also to fulfill the prophecy spoken by Hosea - Hosea 11: 1 (NIV) - "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.

Brotherly hatred paved the way into Egypt for Joseph and Jesus alike.

4) Joseph, as Ruler, Foreshadows Jesus as Ruler - The Jews will bow and acknowledge their brother Jesus is Lord - Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV) - Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, (10) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (11) and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Jews will accept Jesus as Lord when the time of their salvation has arrived in the end time tribulation. The harvest of the body of Christ (church) at pre-tribulation is a sign to the Jews that Jesus, the one they rejected, loved the church. Therefore, they will humble themselves (bow) to the ruling authority of the Christians who will be selected by God to sit on heavenly thrones -

Matthew 19:28 (KJV) - And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Not only the Jews, but carnal Christians (Jesus' adopted brothers) will also bow and acknowledge Christ loved the holy and true church (pillars in the temple of God).

Revelation 3:9 (KJV) - Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. This scripture is spoken to the Philadelphia church.

Sheaves are made during the time of harvest (gathering in the sheaves). The time of harvest in the future is the end time harvest of the church (Jews and Gentiles). Truly, the sheaves of Jesus' Jewish brothers will bow to his sheaf at the end time harvest.

5) HIs brothers' plan to involve the Ishmaelite traders in Joseph's demise was to prevent their guilt of slaying Joseph. They did not want to have Joseph's blood on their hands.

In the same manner, the Jews manipulated Pilate and the Romans to crucify Jesus. Pilate washes his hands of the blood of Jesus. Likewise, the chief priests persuaded the crowd to demand the crucifixion of Jesus so His blood wouldn't be on their hands - Matthew 27:20-25 (NIV) - But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. (21) "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered. (22) "What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!" (23) "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!" (24) When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!" (25) All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!"

6) Joseph was sold into Egypt for the price of a slave

Genesis 37:28 (NIV) - (28) Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt. Joseph, a natural descent son of Jacob, was sold into Egypt for silver by his brothers. Twenty shekels of silver was the price of a slave in that period of time.

Foreshadow: Jesus was sold into the hands of evil powers for twenty shekels of silver (price of a slave) by His Jewish brothers of natural descent. Thirty shekels of silver was the price of a slave in Jesus' time. Matthew 26:15 (NIV) Judas asked, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver coins.

Jacob's Blessing over Joseph Reveals Joseph to be a True Biblical Foreshadow of Christ

Jacob, under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, blessed Joseph. Although Jacob spoke things about Joseph that would be fulfilled during the lifetime of Joseph, these things would also be fulfilled in the distant future in the person of Jesus Christ. The prophetic anointing of the Holy Spirit in Jacob is apparent, as one studies the words of the blessing through Hebrew definitions.

Genesis 49:22-26 (KJV) - Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall: (23) The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him: (24) But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel): (25) Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb: (26) The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.

Selective Word Study of Each Verse -

Genesis 49:22 (KJV) - Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall.

"Joseph" - (Brown-Driver-Brigg's Concordance #3130) Translated from the Hebrew word "Yowceph" = "Jehovah (Yahweh) has added".

The name of Joseph reveals the involvement of God in Joseph's life in a special way. It is through Joseph that God added heirs to the covenant blessings through adoption. How? Jacob adopted Ephraim and Manasseh as sons and made them equal heirs with all the other sons of Jacob. The tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh would be known as the House of Joseph. Genesis 48:5 (NIV) - "Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine."

"Yowceph" was taken from the Hebrew root word (Brown-Driver-Briggs Concordance) #3254 "yacaph" = to add, to increase, to do again

Genesis 48:6 - Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. Any other children born to Joseph will receive their inheritance under the names of Ephraim and Manasseh because Joseph's portion is given to Ephraim and Manasseh (House of Joseph). So any other sons born to Joseph will receive their inheritance along with their nephews, the children of Manasseh and Ephraim.

It is particularly interesting to see God giving Joseph's inheritance to Joseph's first two sons on an equal basis with their uncles, other sons of Joseph. God has elevated Ephraim and Manasseh to be equal to Joseph as heirs to the promise land. Their portion of the promise land was a full portion, not half portions. Through adoption Ephraim and Manasseh have become sons of Jacob. So, Jacob has added to his family through adoption.

Surely, this presented a situation that the other sons of Jacob did not understand. Their nephews (Ephraim and Manasseh) would be considered as their equals when the inheritance was allocated. What was the purpose of changing the traditional inheritance rights of the children? Why not just give Joseph his inheritance and let him divide it in the traditional way?

I believe God is making a hidden prophetic statement to the nation of Israel for future generations. This arrangement foreshadows Jews and Gentiles who receive their inheritance from God through Christ. God adopts Jews and Gentiles and elevate them to be co-heirs with Christ to the promise that God made to Abraham. As Jacob added to his family through adoption, so does God.

Galatians 4:4-7 (KJV) - But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, (5) To redeem them that were under the law (Jews), that we might receive the adoption of sons. (6) And because ye are sons, od hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. (7) Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

This prophecy is hidden manna in the form of a foreshadow because God kept His adoption of sons a secret. It is called the mystery of Christ by the apostle Paul. So, when God was orchestrating the lives of Manasseh and Ephraim, He had His adoption of sons in His heart. Why did God keep it a secret?

Matthew 13:35 (KJV) - That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

Romans 16:25-26 (KJV) - Now to him that is of power to establish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, (26) But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith.

1 Corinthians 2:6-8 (NIV) - We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. (7 ) No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. (8) None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

God kept it a secret from the powers of darkness and the rulers of this age. Otherwise, they would not have crucified Jesus and the adoption of sons could not take place. Without the crucifixion of Jesus and His resurrection the children of God could never be born, adopted by God.

Jews, the natural descendents of Abraham, cannot receive a spiritual inheritance without being reckoned under the name of their brother, Jesus.  Jesus is the Messiah of God! Not only does this apply to the Jews, but also to all other natural descendants of Abraham including all Arab nations (Gentiles) descended from Ishmael. This is the adoption process of God. God makes adoption available to all who would willfully come under the new blood covenant covering of Jesus Christ, including the descendents of Ishmael and Esau.

Genesis 21:12 (KJV) - And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. (13) And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.

"Called" (Brown Driver & Briggs - Hebrew) #7122 - qara' -- to encounter, to befall, to meet; (a) (Qal) to meet, to encounter; to befall (figurative); (b) (Niphal) to meet, to meet unexpectedly: (c) (Hiphil) to cause to meet

Jesus was a natural descendents of Isaac. When God told Abraham that the seed of Abraham would be called through Isaac, He was thinking of Jesus born in the lineage of Isaac. In the distant future through the death and resurrection of Jesus, all who meet or encounter Christ through faith (called by God) are counted as equal co-heirs with Jesus to the covenant promised God made to Abraham. When God calls He draws men unto Himself through Christ - John 6:43-45 (NIV) - "Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. (44) "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. (45) It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.

The name of Joseph makes him a significant player in historical events that prophetically reveal what God will do through Christ, adding heirs to His family by adoption - Romans 8:15-17 (NIV) - For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." (16) The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children (17) Now if we are children, then we are heirs-- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory

Note: Joseph is one of the most interesting and revealing Old Testament type of Christ. Therefore, the children born to him in Egypt (a metaphorical land of darkness) expands the foreshadow of Joseph to include those re-born to God out of a place of darkness.

Genesis 49:22 (Con't) - "Fruitful" - (Brown-Driver-Brigg's Concordance) # 6509, taken from the Hebrew root word "parah" = to bear fruit , to be fruitful, to branch off.

The fruit (offspring) of Joseph will be like branches. Like Joseph the branches will also produce fruit, adding to the family of Jacob. Branches are taken out of Joseph. The word branches metaphorically represents the body of Christ which are also branches taken out of the vine (Jesus). Manasseh and Ephraim were taken out of Joseph and the adopted sons of God (unification of Jew and Gentile) are taken out of Christ.

John 15:5 (NIV) - "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

Genesis 49:22 (Con't) - "Bough"  - (Brown-Driver-Brigg's Concordance # 1121) Translated from the Hebrew word "ben" = a son, a grandson, a child, a member of a group.

Bough - is taken from the root word # 1129 "banah" = to build, to rebuild, to establish, to cause to continue, to build a house, to establish a family.

Joseph as a "fruitful bough" means to build a house, establish a family, to cause to continue and/or rebuild. The same root word can be used to reveal Jesus through whom God builds His house / temple (body of Christ), establishes His family (body of Christ), continues to build His family by re-birth through Christ.

Note: "Banah" is also the root word for "stone". In verse 24 there's a statement which was added to the original manuscript and enclosed in parenthesis - Genesis 49:24 (KJV) - .....hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel). This is verse of scripture helps us understand the anointing that Jacob was under when he spoke this blessing over Joseph. Jacob's words over Joseph directs our attention to the God of Jacob from the time of Joseph's blessing he is the shepherd / stone of Israel. Metaphorically, this refers to Jesus who is the stone of Israel - Matthew 21:42 (KJV) - Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?

Now we can better understand Jesus's words to Peter when He changed his name to Cephas. Jesus saw Peter's faith in Him as Christ, the Son of the Living God and called Him a stone. Jesus simply stated that Peter was by faith a co-heir of God. Jesus saw Himself and Peter as united into one body with one mind and one Spirit. Both were stones of God - John 1:42 (KJV) - And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

Stone is also a most significant word in Israel's crossing of the Jordan River - a foreshadow of the salvation of the Jews - Re: For the Eyes of Your Understanding - Volume IV.

Stone is also a very important New Testament word as God establishes His family as "living stones" through Christ.

1 Peter 2:4-5 (NIV) - As you come to him, the living Stone-- rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him- (5) you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:19-22 (NIV) - Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, (20) built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. (21) In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. (22) And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

In Jacob's blessing over Joseph, his son, the word "bough", taken from the root "banah", speaks of Joseph being like Jesus. Likewise, Jesus is the Son through whom God will build His house. Jesus is the chief cornerstone of the spiritual temple of God - the bride of Christ or family of God.

Genesis 49:22 (Con't) - Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall.

"Bough" - (Strong's Concordance / Hebrew) #1121 - ben (bane); from #1129; a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition.

"Well" - (Strong's Concordance - Hebrew) # 5869 `ayin- probably a primitive word; an eye (literally or figuratively); by analogy, a fountain as the eye of the landscape.

"Well" as used in this scripture refers to the eye of the landscape, a fountain. This is a metaphorical use of the literal word `ayin (eye). The eye of the landscape is the center of the landscape. When one sees the landscape, what he sees first is the fountain at the center of the landscape. All other things in the landscape revolve around the fountain. Metaphorically, the landscape is life and the fountain is the source of life for the landscape. Christ is the fountain of living waters.

Christ is seen symbolically as the fountain of life -

Jeremiah 17:13 (KJV) - O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

Revelation 21:6 (KJV) - And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

When one accepts Christ as his Lord and Savior, then he puts Christ at the center of his life and all other things in his life will revolve around Christ. Then he becomes a branch or a bough that will run over a wall.

Genesis 49:22 (Con't) - "Branches" - (Strong's Concordance - Hebrew) #1323 - Translated from the Hebrew word "bath" = from #1129 (as feminine of #1121 ben [bane]); a daughter.

Branches, in the feminine sense (born from), will come out of Joseph the fruitful vine. This foreshadows Christians whom will be born out of Christ, the fountain of living waters. John 15:5 - "I am the vine, you are the branches..."

Branches is taken from #1129 the root word "banah" = to build, to rebuild, to establish, to cause to continue, to build a house (that is, to establish a family).

#1121 "Bough" represents the one from whom the family is named - Ephesians 3:14-15 (KJV) - For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, (15) Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.

#1129 "Branches" represents the offspring born out of the bough, the bride of Christ.

Genesis 49:22 (Con't) - "Run" - (Strong's Concordance - Hebrew) #6805 taken from the Hebrew root word "tsa` ad" (tsaw-ad') = a primitive root; to pace, i.e., step regularly; (upward) to mount; (along) to march.

The church (Bride of Christ) will march together, as one body. The church will march into the world to do the work of Christ in the ministry of the gospel. In the name (Greek = "authority and character") of Jesus, the church will march (advance) against wickedness and evil forces in the world, even as the Israelites marched against Jericho in their first conquest when taking possession of the Promise Land.

Through the bough (Christ) branches march through the world spreading the good news of the gospel. It is through the spreading of the gospel that the family of God grows (like a vine and its branches) as Jew and Gentile are united together into one body. John 17:20-21(NIV) - "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, (21) that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Genesis 49:22 (Con't) - "Over" - (Strong's Concordance - Hebrew) #5921 - "`al" (al) = above, over, upon, or against.

The Body of Christ marches against the wall, the obstacles of sin that seek to prevent Christians from taking possession of God's promises made available in Christ. The way of life for the Christian is one of abiding in the vine from whom eternal life springs forth. "Over" implies the church, together as one body, will march "above", "upon" and "against" walls of adversity and obstacles to proclaiming the good news of eternal life in Christ. "Over" implies authority to do the work of Christ in ministry, because there is no obstacle that can stop the advancement of the kingdom of God.

"Above" and "upon" = All obstacles are beneath the feet of Jesus and therefore, all things are beneath the feet of the unified body of Christ.

"Against" = Implies the ministry of the gospel through the body of Christ will encounter obstacles that seek to stop the spread of the truth of God.

Persecution will come because of the ministry of the Word. But, the church has been given spiritual power by Christ to minister the gospel - Luke 10:17-19 (NIV) - The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." (18) He replied, "I saw satan fall like lightning from heaven. (19) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you."

Genesis 49:22 Con't. - "The wall" - (Strong's Concordance - Hebrew)  #7891 shiyr (sheer); or (the original form) shuwr (shoor); a primitive root: [identical with #7788 through the idea of strolling minstrelsy]; to sing.

#7788 shuwr (shoor); a primitive root; properly, to turn

The roof word "shuwr" means an obstacle intent on turning one from his march and destination as he takes personal possession of God's promises and ministers the light of God's Word and grace to a world of darkness. No wall can keep the gospel from advancing into the world. From the root word shuwr (the original form of the word) "shiyr" is used to represent one singing minstrelsy (the art and practice of a minstrel singing songs, ballads, etc. as he strolls along his way).

I believe the word "shiyr" implies singing praises to God as one marches through the world spreading the gospel. Singing praise to God has a unique special power of worship in overcoming obstacles (walls) to ministry. I am reminded of the marching song "Onward Christian soldiers marching off to war...". I also recall the sounding of the trumpet and shouts of faith against the walls of Jericho. The Israelites faithfulness to march around Jericho seven times and blow the trumpets and then took possession of a portion of the Promise Land.

Through the study of the Hebrew words contained in the above scripture references, many precepts of salvation are revealed. When Jacob blessed Joseph, his words not only spoke of things pertinent to the moment, but they also spoke things of greater importance for the future, building of the family of God through Christ - Genesis 49:22 (KJV) - Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall.

Was Jacob in a trance or under the anointing of God when he blessed Joseph? I ask this question because the Hebrew root words of this passage of scripture more aptly speaks of Jesus than they do of Joseph. Jacob's anointing was the reason he went against the traditional way of blessing Manasseh and Ephraim, shunning Joseph's attempt to get Jacob to follow tradition.

Chapter 2

Ephraim and Manasseh

Establishing Joseph as a foreshadow or an Old Testament type of Christ is paramount to understanding the parts Ephraim and Manasseh play in the foreshadow. Their part in the foreshadow will reveal God's agenda for Jew and Gentile throughout the New Testament, including the book of Revelation.

Review of the Precept of Adoption of Sons

The most important message of this foreshadow is the revealing of God's heart when He anointed Jacob to speak the words of blessing over Joseph's two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. Included in that message is the adoption of sons. This part of the study reveals the heart of God as our Father!

It was necessary that God keep the adoption of sons a secret until after the crucifixion of Jesus because it is through the blood of Christ that we are adopted into God's family. Therefore, God hid the His adoption of sons in His heart as He orchestrated the writing of the Bible.

Genesis 48:5 (NIV) - "Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.

Ephraim and Manasseh were adopted as sons by their grandfather Jacob, to be heirs to the covenant promise land. Therefore, they became sons of Jacob through Joseph, else the adoption would not be legitimate and they could not have become equal heirs with their uncles.

Ephraim and Manasseh's adoption meant they both had equal rights with the other sons of Jacob although they were naturally born as his grandchildren. They were equal heirs to Jacob's estate and equal heirs to the promise land. This is an amazing precept because there was never another time in the Bible where this happen. Literally speaking, adopting grandchildren as sons was not possible in the traditional sense.

Literally speaking, Ephraim and Manasseh could have received their portion of the promise land as children of Joseph. The adoption was not necessary for their entry into the promise land. So, what was the purpose of this adoption? Why did God bring these two adopted sons into equal status with the natural born sons of Jacob (Israel)? What is God revealing to Israel?

Jacob's adoption of Manasseh and Ephraim as sons does not compute in the literal traditional sense, but has a very important prophetic meaning in the context of the foreshadow we are studying. The Old Testament prophets didn't know about the adoption of sons through Messiah because this was a secret of God.  As previously mentioned, their adoption as sons is just one of the many hidden things God placed in the Old Testament, through which Israel could discern God's plan for their distant future salvation at the appointed time. God wants Israel to see by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, their adoption as sons of God through Messiah. Numerous times historical events orchestrated by God are foreshadows of future events that will take place under Christ.

Foreshadow: The rebirth of Jews and Gentiles through Messiah, the Son of God, occurs under the New Blood Covenant. The Gentiles and Jews are adopted as sons by God through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:5) and became heirs to the covenant promise, including the future promise land of New Jerusalem (Ephesians 3:6). Christians are co-heirs with Christ, having equal status to the covenant promises - Romans 8:15-17 (NIV) - For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." (16) The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children (17) Now if we are children, then we are heirs -- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory

Ephesians 1:5 (NIV) - He predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.

Even as Ephraim and Manasseh were adopted by Jacob through his son Joseph, the Gentile and Jew are adopted by God through His Son, Christ Jesus. This Old Testament event overlays the New Testament event.

Manasseh - The Firstborn of Joseph in the NATURAL Realm

Genesis 41:51 (NIV) - Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh and said, "It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father's household.

"Manasseh" - (Strong's Concordance - Hebrew) #5382) is taken from the root word "nashah" (naw-shaw) which means "to forget"; figuratively "to neglect".

Joseph's trouble is associated with his brothers' rejection, as they sold him into the hands of the Ishmaelites for the price of a slave. When Manasseh was born, Joseph forgot the hurt and rejection of his brothers. He was joyous over his firstborn son, reflecting his forgiveness for his brothers' hatred and rejection. Thus, Joseph named him Manasseh.

Likewise, when Christ was rejected by his brothers, as he was sold into the hands of the Romans for the price of a slave and then was crucified, he will forget their rejection and the trouble he endured on the cross when he sees the firstborn of his offspring, Christians and Messianic Jews.

Manasseh's name also figuratively means "to neglect". Figuratively speaking, when the Jews rejected Jesus they failed to believe His testimony and failed to enter beneath the new blood sacrifice for the forgiveness of their sins. Then God neglected (not forgot) the Jew and turned to the Gentile with the gospel of salvation under the New Blood Covenant - Hebrews 8:9 (KJV) Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. (10) For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people.

Even as God did not regard Israel in the days in the desert because they did not continue in the ways of the covenant, God also did not regard (neglected) Israel when they failed to accept Jesus as His Messiah. He turned to the Gentiles with the gospel.

Had the Jews accepted Jesus as Messiah, they would have continued in the covenant because the New Blood Covenant is the fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant. But, their rejection of Jesus as Messiah caused them to stumble until a later time. However, after those days (when the full number of Gentiles has come in) God will bring Israel into the New Blood Covenant during the end time tribulation period and complete their salvation through the ministry of the gospel. Then Christ will rejoice over the rebirth of the Jews, even as Joseph rejoiced over the birth of Manasseh.

Joseph forgot all his trouble with his brothers and forgave them of their betrayal. Jesus will forget all His trouble with His brothers and forgive them of their rejection. God will forget the Jews rejection of His Son, Messiah because they will be born again under His covenant blood covering and become His adopted sons.

Ephraim - The Second Born of Joseph in the NATURAL Realm

Genesis 41:52 (NIV) - The second son he named Ephraim and said, "It is because God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering."

"Ephraim"- (Strong's Concordance - Hebrew) - #669 'Ephrayim (ef-rah'- yim) is a dual of masculine form of Ephrathah (#672) and means "double fruit".

Ephrathah (#672) also is another name of Bethlehem, the birth place of Jesus. "Double fruit" means Ephraim will become greater than Manasseh. Ephraim will produce a greater number of souls for the kingdom.

Remember, Joseph's name comes from the Hebrew root word #3254 yacaph - to add, to increase, to do again, to continue to do a thing.

In the same way as Jacob continued to add to his family through the adoption of Joseph sons, God continues to add to His family through Christ. It is through Jesus that the Gentiles (body of Christ) are born and the family of God has its most fruitful increase. Figuratively, through Christ God begins to branch out to the nations outside of Israel (Gentiles). It will require a longer time for preaching the gospel globally and reach all peoples than it takes to preach to the nation of Israel.

The agenda time of the Gentiles begins when the disciples were scattered into Gentile areas, because of the Jews persecution, after Jesus' resurrection and will last until the pre-trib judgment of the church just prior to the great tribulation period of time. Agenda time for preaching to the Jews consists of the three year ministry of Jesus (prior to His death and resurrection) and the first three and half years of the seven year tribulation. A much longer agenda time for the gospel has been apportioned to the Gentiles than to the Jews. However, there are many Jews who accept Christ during the "times of the Gentiles" and are reborn into God's family.

Ephraim - The Firstborn of God in the SPIRITUAL Realm

Jacob placed Ephraim ahead of Manasseh for the covenant blessing. Why did Jacob break with the traditional blessing of the firstborn? Surely Jacob is anointed by God to do so! Why should Manasseh be second to Ephraim? I believe God orchestrated this event so one day in the future it will be shown to the Jews that Ephraim (Gentiles) is the firstborn of Christ in the spiritual realm.

Jeremiah 31:9 - They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel's father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son.

It is obvious that God is speaking through Jeremiah making a prophetic declaration of the spiritual birth of Ephraim because God is saying that He is the father of spiritual Israel. God is not speaking of the natural realm because in the natural realm Jacob is the father of Israel. So this scripture is definitely prophetic concerning the spiritual birth of Ephraim.

Ephraim was the second born of Joseph in the natural realm. But, Ephraim foreshadows the rebirth of the Gentile, the firstborn of God in the spiritual realm. This is the meaning of "the last is made first and the first is made last" - Matthew 19:29-30 (NIV) - And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. (30) But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.

When does Ephraim (Gentiles who are saved) become the firstborn of God? This is a most interesting topic discussed at a later point in this study - Re: THE INHERITANCE OF EPHRAIM.

Jacob referred to Joseph as a "fruitful vine" and Joseph's selection of the name Ephraim refers to him as "fruitful". God sees Joseph as a foreshadow of Christ and Ephraim as a foreshadow of a branch in the body of Christ (Church) in complete unity, as one body. Ephraim is the Gentile branch. They are like Christ (Christians). Manasseh is the Jewish branch.

Ephesians 2:11-16 (NIV) - Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men) -- (12) remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. (13) But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. (14) For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one (Jew and Gentile) and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, (15) by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, (16) and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.

Ephesians 3:6 (NIV) - This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Jacob's Blessing Reveals Ephraim Will Be Greater Than a Tribe

Ephraim's numbers will be greater than Manasseh's - Genesis 48:19 (KJV) - And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

Foreshadow: The Gentiles (Ephraim) are not a single nation like the nation of Israel consisting of twelve tribes. Ephraim will be a multitude of nations (Jacob has a global vision during this blessing of Ephraim). Jacob had to be looking into the spiritual realm to see Ephraim as a "multitude of nations" because literally it is not possible to have a group of nations inside one nation. Inside Israel, Ephraim could never advance beyond the status of a tribe. For Ephraim to become a multitude of nations this must take place outside the nation of Israel in a distant future time. Literally, there was a time when the name of Ephraim did represent a group of tribes when the nation of Israel was divided, but never a multitude of nations. Therefore, this scripture must be a prophetic revelation of the growth of spiritual Ephraim - the Gentile nations.

***********************************************

God's Agenda for the Nation of Israel and the Gentile Nations - The "First is Made Last and the Last is Made First".

Genesis 48: 12-14 (NIV) - Then Joseph removed them from Israel's knees and bowed down with his face to the ground. And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel's left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel's right hand, and brought them close to him. But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim's head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh's head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.

"Brought them close to him" - Jacob brings his adopted sons close to him for the blessings.

Foreshadow: God bringing his adopted sons (Jew and Gentile) close to him for blessing through the power of the Holy Spirit under the New Blood Covenant. Ephesians 2:13 - But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.

"Brought near" reveals God's adoption of those who by faith believe Jesus died for the remission of their sins and will be brought near in the end time harvests. The end time harvests are a time of God moving His adopted sons out of the natural world and into heaven near Him.

Foreshadow Repeat: When God changed Jacob's name to Israel He saw Jacob as the father of Israel in the natural realm (Genesis 32:28). Since God is the Father of Israel in the spiritual realm (Jeremiah 31:9), Jacob's blessing over his adopted sons in the natural realm foreshadows God blessing his adopted sons, Jew and Gentile in the spiritual realm.

Note: When studying the New Testament Bible the reader should always look for God blessing His adopted sons through the redemptive work of Christ, bringing Jew and Gentile together into one body, in complete unity as heirs of God - Ephesians 3:4-6. This work of God is fulfilled in the book of Revelation through Christ during the end time. Refer to For the Eyes of Your Understanding - Volume V

Jacob's Blessing of Ephraim & ManassehJoseph set Manasseh on the correct knee because traditionally this is the place for the firstborn to receive blessings. But, Jacob is not thinking of granting traditional blessings to the firstborn in the natural realm. He has a vision into the spiritual realm and sees the inheritance of the saints to the promises of God in Christ (Ephesians 3:6).

Ephraim being placed ahead of Manasseh for the covenant blessing foreshadows the Jew's rejection of the gospel and Christ turning to the Gentiles for their salvation through the gospel when the disciples were persecuted and scattered into Samaria and other parts outside Israel.

Foreshadow: Ephraim represents the Gentiles who are last to receive the preaching of the gospel, but are first to be harvested and receive the covenant blessings in the spiritual realm. The last is made first. - Matthew 19:29-30.

Note: During the time God has established for the spread of the gospel to the Gentile nations, there are Messianic Jews who also hear the gospel and are saved. Therefore, in the foreshadow Ephraim represents agenda time God has established for the ministry of the gospel to the world outside the nation of Israel. This time is referred to as "the times of the Gentiles" by the Apostle Paul. Agenda time represents God's time plan for salvation through Christ. Although the "times of the Gentiles" is a segment of time for the salvation of Gentiles, the gospel is open for anyone who will believe in Christ. God never refuses anyone's faith in Christ as the Messiah whether Jew or Gentile. God's agenda time for the ministry of the gospel to Gentiles will include the salvation of many Jew's and His agenda time for the ministry of the gospel to the Jews will include the salvation of many Gentiles.

Manasseh represents agenda time for the Jews, who are first to receive the preaching of the gospel, but last to be harvested and receive the covenant blessings. The first is made last.

Additionally, there were Gentiles who believed during Jesus' time on the earth and were saved under the Mosaic Law under Jewish agenda, prior to Jesus' death and resurrection - John 4: 39-41.

The first part of God's gospel agenda was centered on first taking the gospel to the nation of Israel - Matthew 15:22-24 (NIV) - A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession." (23) Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us." (24) He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."

"Sent only to the lost sheep of Israel" - Jesus' statement is concerned with agenda at that particular time when He spoke to the Gentile Canaanite woman. Even though gospel agenda to the Gentiles did not begin until after Christ's resurrection, God did not refuse the faith of both Jews and Gentiles who believed in Christ wholeheartedly prior to His death. God never refuses the faith of any believer, regardless of the agenda direction of the gospel, whether directed to the nation of Israel or directed to the Gentiles. This is an important point of the foreshadow - to remember that Jesus realized He was under a specific part of God's agenda. Else, it is difficult to understand why He made the statement He was sent "only to the lost sheep of Israel".

In the New Testament "the first shall be last and the last shall be first" precept is first mentioned in Matthew 19:30, but this precept had its biblical origin in the Old Testament when Ephraim was put ahead of Manasseh. Many times God has selected the second born over the first born for special purposes. Abel was favored over Cain, Isaac was put ahead of Ishmael; Jacob ahead of Esau and Moses ahead of Aaron. God choosing second born Ephraim over first born Manasseh is not unusual.

Genesis 48:12-14 (Con't) - "Even though Manasseh was the firstborn"- Even though Israel was the first to receive the Abrahamic Covenant (phase one of the covenant), the Gentile nations are put ahead of Israel under the New Blood Covenant (phase two of the covenant) because the Jews rejected Jesus as God's Sacrificial Lamb. Romans 11: 25-26a - I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. (26) And so all Israel will be saved.

THE DIVIDED INHERITANCE OF THE TRIBE OF MANASSEH

Historically, half of the tribe of Manasseh received their land inheritance on the east side of the Jordan River in Joshua 13:8; 12:6; 13:29-31. The other half tribe received their inheritance on the west side by a commandment of God in Joshua 13: 6-7.

God has a special reason for dividing the tribe of Manasseh when the inheritance was allocated. This reason is only revealed in the foreshadow.

****************************************

MANASSEH'S EAST SIDE INHERITANCE UNDER MOSES

This land on the east side was taken by Moses and given to the half tribe of Manasseh, the Reubenites and Gadites. This half tribe of Manasseh received their inheritance under Moses, not Joshua. The inheritance was allocated prior to "crossing over" Jordan.

Foreshadow - This half tribe of Manasseh (Jews) under Moses' leadership foreshadows faithful Jews who were accepted by God and approved for receiving their promised spiritual inheritance under the the agenda time for the Mosaic Law prior to the death and resurrection of Jesus. Meaning, they were saved as far as their faith was concerned, but they were held captive by the grave until their sins could be remitted by the blood of Jesus after His death and resurrection. They could not "cross over" until after Jesus' death and resurrection. This is another important part of the foreshadow - there were some Jews that were saved and held captive in the grave until God covered their sins with the blood of Jesus. This emphasizes the necessity for the remission of sin by the blood of Jesus. This is evidenced by the following scripture -

Matthew 27: 50-53 (KJV) - Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. (51) And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;(52) And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,(53) And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

The moment Jesus yielded up the Holy Spirit and died, immediately the veil in the temple was torn in two and the Way was open for the holy people to cross over the great divide. There were many Jews, who believed in the Messiah prior to Jesus' birth or his mission as the Son of Man. These were Old Testament saints who longed to see the day of their Messiah, but died prior to His arrival. These were resurrected from their graves when Christ died on the cross and the veil in the temple was torn in two, because His blood was shed for the remission of their sins. Although, their graves were opened, they did not leave their graves until after Jesus' resurrection from His tomb three days later. Then they left their graves were seen in the holy city by many people. If the death of Christ and the blood of Christ caused them to be raised from the tombs, then they were saved prior to the first advent of Christ. As far as their faith in the coming Messiah was concerned, they were saved. But, no one could cross over until Christ died and the veil of separation in the temple was torn in two and "crossing over" was possible.

This scripture in verse 52 is the most meaningful evidence for the power of the blood of Christ. The minute He died, the blood was shed and the saints' graves were opened. This is the symbolic meaning for the parting of the veil. The parting of the waters of Jordan also has the same symbolic meaning - the Way is open by the death and shed blood of Jesus for believer's to take possession of God's promised inheritance in Christ Jesus.

Likewise, the scripture in verse 53 is the most meaningful evidence for the power of the resurrection of Christ. The saints could not leave the grave until after Jesus left His tomb. Why? God required Jesus' ascension into heaven to sprinkled His blood on the heavenly vessels of ministry. Thus, fulfilling the New Blood Covenant in the presence of the Father and granting new life for His children. Then the saints could leave the grave.

(A quick comment on the heavenly vessels of ministry) - The tabernacle in the wilderness and all it's vessels of ministry had to be sprinkled with the sacrificial blood of animals, as required by the Mosaic Law -

Hebrews 9:19-24 (KJV) - For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, (20) Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. (21) Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. (22) And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.(23) It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. (24) For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.

The above scripture explains why Jesus had to enter heaven before any of God's children. God was waiting for Jesus' arrival to sprinkle His blood on the heavenly vessels of the ministry. Why? This event fulfilled God's objective for having created the heavens and earth - "He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world" - Ephesians 1:4.

What is that ministry?

He sent His Word - John 1:1; 14 (KJV) - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (Verse 14) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Jesus was the only begotten Son of God and He was the Word because He only spoke what the Father told Him to speak - John 14:10.

Part of Jesus' mission in the earth is to speak only the Word of God and to establish the ministry of that Word through the church. While Jesus' is in heaven interceding for the saints, the ministry of the Word through the saints goes forth under the power of the Holy Spirit until the day He returns. This is the symbolic meanings of the vessels of the ministry in heaven and the copies of those vessels in the tabernacle of the wilderness. Christians are the vessels through which the ministry goes forth into the world.

For an indepth study of the tabernacle's pattern see Volume 7 - Christ in the Tabernacle

In the above mentioned scripture (Hebrews 9:19-20) Moses sprinkled blood on both the book and all the people after reading the law to them. He said in verse 20 -"This is the "blood of the testament". This is the meaning of the vessels of ministry - The objective of God while Jesus is in heaven is for the church to minister God truth about the blood and the Word (the gospel). It was therefore required by God that Jesus first ascend into heaven immediately after His resurrection and sprinkle His blood on these vessels in the presence of God.

(Now back to the resurrection)

Matthew 27: 52 (KJV)- And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,(53) And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

What became of those who were raised from their graves?

Ephesians 4:8 (KJV) - "Wherefore he saith, When he ascended on high he led captivity captive...."

"Captivity"- Jews who were held captive in their tombs until Christ shed His blood for their sins.

"Captive" - Once freed from their tombs, these Old Testament saints were then slaves of Christ as each was purchased by his blood, held captive.

Acts 20:28 (KJV) - Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Of course, Ephesians 4:8 speaks of what occurred at the time of His ascension. He led captivity captive applies not only to those Old Testament saints who were awaiting the covering of His blood, but also is a principle of salvation that applies to those who will be covered by His blood in future times.

The Abrahamic Covenant was in effect up to the moment that Christ died on the cross. Then the New Blood Covenant brought fulfillment to the Abrahamic Covenant, but still remains within the frame work of the Abrahamic Covenant promise. This precept is validated by the fact that Old Testament saints who longed to see the arrival of Messiah actually were accepted by God and given their spiritual inheritance when their sins were remitted under the New Testament blood of Christ - Matthew 27: 52-53. This event was foreshadowed by The half tribe of Manasseh who received their inheritance under Moses on the east side of the Jordan, many years prior to the parting of the Jordan river when the Jews crossed over to take possession of their earthly inheritance - the promise land.

It is a good thing to see God's mercy for those who longed to see Messiah's arrival, but did not live to see Him.

*************************************

MANASSEH'S WEST SIDE INHERITANCE UNDER JOSHUA

Historically, forty years later the other half of the tribe of Manasseh received their inheritance along with the tribe of Ephraim (Joshua 17: 7-11) when they "crossed over" to the west side of the Jordan River into the promised land under Joshua. Ephraim and Manasseh shared one allotment of land together under Joseph.

Joshua 16:1 (KJV) - The allotment for Joseph began at the Jordan of Jericho, east of the waters of Jericho, and went up from there through the desert into the hill country of Bethel.

There was one allotment for Joseph.

Joshua 16:4 (KJV) - So Manasseh and Ephraim, the descendants of Joseph, received their inheritance.

The allotment for Joseph was divided between Manasseh and Ephraim.

Joshua 16:9 (KJV) - It also included all the towns and their villages that were set aside for the Ephraimites within the inheritance of the Manassites.

Within the inheritance of Manasseh, Ephraim had towns and villages.

Foreshadow: The Gentiles (figuratively Ephraim) are also led by Jesus into the promised inheritance of the kingdom, promised to Abraham and his descendants.

The land was first promised to Israel of natural descent. When the Gentiles are saved under the New Blood Covenant, they receive their inheritance because they are grafted into Abrahamic Covenant and the promised inheritance. Therefore the Gentiles receive their inheritance within the inheritance of the Jews, even as the "Ephraimites received land within the inheritance of the Manassites". Prophetically, this is repeated by the Apostle John in - John 4:21-22 (NIV) - Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. (22) You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.

Both historically and prophetically speaking, the Jews' inheritance is divided. Historically, some received their inheritance of the promise land under Moses and some received their inheritance under Joshua. Prophetically, some received their spiritual inheritance under the Mosaic Law (Matthew 27: 50-53) and many years later the rest will receive their spiritual inheritance under the New Blood Covenant (Revelation 7: 9-10). In between, the Gentiles are grafted into covenant salvation and receive their spiritual inheritance. Romans 11:25 (NIV) - I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. (26) And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. (27) And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins."

The author personally believes God orchestrated the divided inheritance of the promise land for Manasseh in the Old Testament to foreshadow the Jews' divided inheritance of the kingdom of God in the New Testament. Some received their inheritance when Jesus was resurrected and the others will receive their inheritance after the times of the Gentiles is closed which begins the fulfillment of Daniel's seventieth week (the end time seven year tribulation). The Jews' salvation is divided in time (this is a part of God's agenda).

This Old Testament historical account of Manasseh and Ephraim's inheritance precisely overlays the Jews' and Gentiles' salvation in the New Testament. Otherwise, its too much of a coincidence.

EPHRAIM'S SPIRITUAL INHERITANCE

The spiritual inheritance of the Ephraim foreshadows the engrafting of the Gentiles to the covenant promise. The "times of the Gentiles" ends with the end time judgment and harvest of the Gentile churches. For an in-depth validation of this foreshadow - See Spiritual Inheritance of Ephraim (click here)

JOSEPH MAKES HIMSELF KNOWN TO HIS BROTHERS

Joseph Welcoming Bros.Joseph makes himself known to his brothers many years after they sold him into Egypt. Likewise, Christ will make Himself known to His brothers (Israel) many years after Judas and the priest sold Him into the hands of darkness on the night of Passover.

This part of the foreshadow will give one a perspective of the grace of God extended to the Jew when Christ sends the 144,000 to Israel and to the Gentile nations with the gospel. Also seen, is the reaction of the Jews when they realize that Jesus, whom they crucified, was their promised Messiah.

Genesis 45: 4-5 - Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come close to me." When they had done so, he said, "I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you."

"Come close to me" - Foreshadows the time that Christ Jesus will turn back to His Jewish brothers and make Himself known to them during the seventieth week of Daniel's prophecy.

Even as Jacob brought Manasseh and Ephraim near to him for the covenant blessing and Joseph's brothers came close to Joseph to be saved from the drought; in the distant future, the Jews will come near to Christ through the preaching of the gospel by the 144,000 to be saved from a prolonged spiritual drought. As the brothers of Joseph were distressed that they hated and rejected Joseph, the Jews will be distressed at the time of their salvation when they realize they rejected Jesus as the Messiah during His ministry in Jerusalem, as the Son of Man.

"It was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you." - Even as Joseph spoke these words to his brothers, Christ will tell His brothers not to be angry with themselves for selling Him into the hands of darkness, because it was to save Gentile lives that God sent Him ahead.

Genesis 45:7 - "But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance."

This scripture foreshadows Christ going ahead of the Jews (His ascent to the right hand of God) and His working through the ministry of the 144,000 to take the gospel of salvation to the Jews. The fruit of their ministry will be a great deliverance. At mid-tribulation there will be a harvest of the great multitude (Revelation 7:9-17) and then there will be a remnant (Revelation 12:13-17) that will be preserved for the second coming of Christ and a demonstration of another great deliverance (Revelation 19:11-16).

**********************************************

Who Will Be the Remnant Left on the Earth for the Second Coming of Christ?

All the tribes of Israel receiving their spiritual inheritance under Christ (See Spiritual Inheritance of Ephraim) have been accounted for in this foreshadow, except one! The tribe of Dan.

It is difficult to think that God has not provided for the salvation of the tribe of Dan. Many believe Dan will not receive an inheritance because Dan is not listed in the 144,000 (Revelation 7: 4-8). I believe Dan is not listed in the 144,000 because the tribe of Dan does not receive their spiritual inheritance with the other tribes in the harvest of the great multitude at mid-tribulation (Revelation 7:9). The tribe of Dan will receive their spiritual inheritance from Christ, face to face, when He comes to the earth to annihilate the enemies of Israel. I believe Dan will be the remnant on earth to welcome Christ upon his return! This is revealed in the following scripture when Jacob spoke the blessings over his twelve sons -

Genesis 49:16-18 (KJV) - Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. (17) Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. (18) I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD.

"I have waited for thy salvation" - This prophetic statement sets Dan apart from the rest of the tribes. Dan is chosen to be the tribe that will wait on the earth for it's promised inheritance and salvation at the arrival of Christ with all the saints for the Battle of Armageddon. Although Dan was a tribe that was "a serpent by the way", because Dan set up a graven image causing Israel to fall backward, Dan will still be saved. But, Dan will have to wait a little longer than the other tribes.

Judges 18:29-31 (KJV) - And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first. (30) And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land. (31) And they set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

Why will Dan will have to wait longer than the other tribes for it's promised inheritance?

The only way Dan can make it through the time of God's wrath upon the earth is under the grace of Christ, as Christ divinely protects this tribe. This will be a great experience of the grace and mercy of God to the tribe of Dan. I am reminded of Christ having chosen Paul, the worst of Jews who persecuted the church, to be the one to carry the gospel to Rome and the Gentiles. Would Christ be any less merciful to Dan, the worst of the tribes?

Revelation 12:13-14 (NIV) - When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. (14) The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the desert, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent's reach.

The above scripture speaks of a woman in Revelation 12:1-2 (KJV) - And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: (2) And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.

Who is the woman with a crown of twelve stars?

First, in the Hebrew language the word "woman" was derived from the word "man" because Eve was taken from the side of the man Adam (Genesis 2:23). So, woman in this scripture also means she was taken from the side of a man, Christ Jesus. This woman is the Jewish part of the body of Christ.

Secondly, the woman is travailing in birth and pained to give birth. This birth is not a literal, but a spiritual birth because of the time of deliverance (salvation) is at hand. Mathew 24: 4-8 describes the first half of the end time seven year tribulation as the beginning of birth pains (Israel's deliverance).

Matthew 24:6-8 (KJV) - And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. (7) For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. (8) All these are the beginning of sorrows.

"Sorrow" (Strong's Concordance / Greek) #5604 - odin (o-deen'); a pang or throe, especially of childbirth.

Use in KJV - pain, sorrow, travail.

Another scripture in Thessalonians describing the end time travail of the woman with child.

1 Thess 5:3 (KJV) - For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

"When they shall say, Peace and safety" - This phrase describes the beginning of the great tribulation, which begins when the world representative (anti-christ) confirms a covenant of peace with many for one week (Daniel 9:27).

The aforementioned scripture concerning the woman with a crown of 12 stars is speaking of giving birth, rather than the beginning of birth pains - Revelation 12:2 (KJV) And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. This occurs at mid-tribulation when the child of the woman is born (rapture of the Jews).

Thirdly, this is time during the end time when the serpent is at war with Israel (woman). This occurs during the last half of the great seven year tribulation. After the rapture of the Jews, the dragon makes war with the woman, as previously mentioned in Revelation 12:13 (NIV) - When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. The male child is Jesus, born a Jew. So, evidently the woman represents the nation of Jews.

Fourthly, most of the Jews were saved at mid-tribulation when the Great Multitude was taken off the earth. But, there were many who did not repent during the preaching ministry of the 144,000 and were left on the earth for the three and one half year reign of the anti-christ when he sets up the abomination that causes desolation from God. Out of those who remain on the earth, the tribe of Dan is selected to be a remnant that is divinely protected from the persecution of the anti-christ to welcome the arrival of Christ Jesus into Israel.

Even as Jesus was welcomed by the Jews into Jerusalem riding on the foal of a donkey (first advent), Jesus will be welcomed by Jews (tribe of Dan) into Jerusalem once again riding upon a white horse (second advent).

NOW, ALL OF ISRAEL IS SAVED AND ACCOUNTED FOR IN THE BIBLICAL ACCOUNT OF THE END TIMES.

**********************************************************

This part of this study is additional validation of Joseph as an Old Testament figure of Christ Jesus. Moses' blessing over Joseph is different than Jacob's blessing over Joseph, as Moses prophetically speaks of the ends of the earth when Jew and Gentile are saved.

THE BLESSING OF MOSES OVER THE HOUSE OF JOSEPH

The following scripture is included in this work because it foreshadows the work of Christ through the gospel and further validates Joseph as an Old Testament type of Jesus. Additionally, the following scriptures foreshadow the work of Jesus in the earth for transforming men into members of the family of God.

Deuteronomy 33: 16b-17 (NIV) - "Let all these rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince among his brothers. (17) In majesty he is like a firstborn bull; his horns are the horns of a wild ox. With them he will gore the nations even those at the ends of the earth. Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim; such are the thousands of Manasseh."

Moses, like Jacob when Jacob blessed his sons, also refers to Joseph as a "prince among his brothers". It is interesting to note that Moses repeated verbatim the words Jacob spoke when Jacob blessed Joseph some 500 years earlier - Genesis 49:26 - "Let all these rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince among his brothers."

"Ten thousands of Ephraim; such are the thousands of Manasseh" - Moses' blessing over the tribe of Joseph includes the thousands of Manasseh and ten thousands of Ephraim. Ephraim is more fruitful than Manasseh. Although Manasseh and Ephraim existed 500 years earlier, their tribes are very much a part of God's blessing spoken through Moses. The House of Joseph is a significant part of Israel's history because the House of Joseph foreshadows the future House of God, the Body of Christ.

Manasseh and Ephraim's inheritance was later determined by Joshua to be insufficient and additional territory was granted to them.

Joshua 17:17-18 (KJV) - And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only: (18) but the forested hill country as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have iron chariots and though they are strong, you can drive them out."

Manasseh and Ephraim sharing one allotment was the intention of God. In the scripture below God showed Moses the promise land and included Ephraim and Manasseh as sharing one territory, the territory of Joseph. The House of Joseph has a special Old Testament meaning. It foreshadows the body of Christ. Formation of the body of Christ is in answer to the prayer Jesus prayed in John 17:20-21(NIV) - "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, (21) that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Deuteronomy 34:1-2 (NIV) - Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole land-- from Gilead to Dan, (2) all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea,

This scripture foreshadows God's intention to bring Ephraim (Gentiles) and Manasseh (Jews) into a single inheritance (one territory), one body united as sharers (heirs of the promise) to the promise that is in Jesus Christ - Ephesians 3:6 (NIV) - This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Deuteronomy 33:17 (Con't) - "Majesty like a Firstborn Bull" - This phrase indicates the authority of Joseph that was his during his time in Egypt.

Foreshadows: Jesus who had majesty (all power and authority) over the powers of darkness.

Matthew 28:18 - ...."All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." All authority is his because he died and was the Firstborn from among the dead, Colossians 1:18 - And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the Firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Deuteronomy 33:17 (Con't) - "Horns of a wild ox" - The Hebrew word for "horns" (Strong's Hebrew Dictionary) #7161 is "qeren" (keh'-ren) which means "ray" and figuratively means "power". "Qeren" is derived from the Hebrew root word (#7160) "qaran" (kaw- ran') which means "to shoot out horns" and figuratively means "rays".

"Horns" figuratively means a ray of light (Holy Spirit empowering the preached Word) which projects forth doing the work of God, spiritually goring (pierce) those upon whom it shines and bringing repentance. The horns act in a way that is not predictable; such are the horns of a wild ox. The Holy Spirit will empower God's truth and those who preach and minister truth - John 3:8 (NIV) - The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." The preached Word under the power of the Holy Spirit will indiscriminately gore the hearts of those who hear the message with unpredictable results.

Power will come from the horns in the same manner as rays emitting from a light. This goring action is the preached Word which proclaims truth, instills faith, convicts of sin, encourages repentance and empowers life. To those who are saved it will be the aroma of Christ as the fragrance of life. To those who are perishing, the aroma of Christ will be the smell of death. Either way, Christ is commended.

2 Corinthians 2:14-16 (NIV) - But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.(15) For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. (16) To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?

Note: Symbolically, this goring is also represented in the Old Testament by the horns on the corners of the bronze altar of sacrifice in the courtyard of the tabernacle and on the corners of the incense altar in the Holy Place of the tabernacle. Altars are made for sacrificing. In a time of sacrificing, one is gored when he dies to the old way and accepts the Testament of God (God's Word and promises) and trusts in God to fulfill that Word in his new life. This goring is an act of division and sanctification (goring), a spiritual separation, consecrating man to God. Additionally, this goring (salvation and sanctification), is symbolically revealed in the design of the Bronze Sea of Solomon's Temple which sat upon twelve bulls (KJV uses "oxen") with horns, three facing in all four directions. It's the same metaphor as "horns of a wild ox" spoken by Moses over the House of Joseph. The foreshadow of the Bronze Sea represents the sanctifying work of the Word of God to the four corners of the earth. The Bronze Sea was for the washing of the Levitical Priesthood prior to entry into the Tabernacle Tent to minister on behalf of the Israelites. This washing foreshadows the washing of the Royal Priesthood of believers through the washing of water by the Word of God - Ephesians 5:25-26 (KJV) - Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; (26) That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.

It is beneficial to us as believers to see the testimony of Christ coming from Christ with power and authority.

Deuteronomy 33:17 (Con't) - "Gore" - (Strong's Concordance - Hebrew) #5055 - is derived from the Hebrew word "nagach" (naw-gakh'); a primitive root; to butt with the horns; figuratively, to war against.

The goring action of the horns is to wage war against those things in a Christian's life that bring death and destruction, resulting in eternal life. Therefore, goring will bring division and separation between light and darkness, creating an enmity (adversity) between life and death. When man accepts Christ as Lord and Savior then God establishes this enmity and the Christian is set apart unto God. God is sovereign in his life.

First Goring - Symbolically, taking the Israelite out of Egypt - In the same way as God brought the Israelites out of Egypt and separated them from the pagan life of the Egyptians, God will separate each Christian from worldliness and pagan lifestyles. This is a goring action because the Christian heard the Word of God and believed what the Word said - exemplified in John 3:16 (NIV) - "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. At that moment, God establishes this separation and the believer is saved (2 Corinthians 6: 16-18).

First, God separates those under His covenant from the pagan world (as in Egypt). To those under His covenant He is sovereign in their lives. This separation by salvation is an act of God and the believer is re-born into the family of God. Rebirth brings God's divine protection and provisional support throughout the process of growing spiritually.

To those not under His covenant He cannot help because their sins are not covered by the blood of His Sacrificial Lamb and their wills are not submitted to Him.

Rebirth by faith is the beginning of man's salvation experience. But, there are other separations that must occur for his salvation to be wholly complete.

Second Goring - Symbolically, taking Egypt out of the Israelite - The next separation is the separation in the heart of the Christian between old pagan habits (behavioral responses to life's issues) and new spiritual laws of life. This is a separation by sanctification and transforms the mindset. The Christian will now employ the Word of God in his daily life by faith, overcoming those situations that appear to threaten him and destroy him. The Christian will not live life unto himself, but unto God. Therefore, God is sovereign and will grant him victory in life's circumstances. The Christian will fight an internal war between the old way of life and the new way of life, as taught by God's Word. As he overcomes life's issues by faith, he experiences his faith in God and will grow and mature spiritually, revealing the sovereign majesty of God in his life.

Goring should then be viewed as an act of division or separation, separating mankind unto God. The first separation is in the land, the second is in the heart.

Christian's should view the testimony of Christ as having power and authority to save.

Isaiah 55:11 (NIV) - "...my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." The Word of God is sown into the earth through Christ and it has the power to accomplish what God desires. God upholds His Word in each Christian's life.

When Simeon blessed the baby Jesus in the temple when the baby was eight days old, he told Mary, "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword (word of God) will pierce (gore) your own heart too." - Luke 2: 34-35 (NIV). Mary is like all others who will have their hearts pierced. Mary, the mother of Jesus, learned and followed the testimony of Jesus. Her salvation was rooted in her faith in God's spoken word to her and later through Jesus. Obviously, Mary knew Jesus was the Son of God, but she had to experience Jesus' death for her sins. Mary, like all other Christians, was reconciled to God through Jesus' sacrificial death on the cross. Mary was a woman under the Law of Moses. It is not possible that Mary has a place of divinity even though she was the virgin mother of the man Jesus. Otherwise, the sword would not pierce (gore) and reveal her heart like all other Jews who also believe.

Matthew 4:4 (NIV) - It is written: `Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" The word of God feeds man and provides spiritual nourishment for eternal life.

Romans 1:16 (NIV) - I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. God's plan for the gospel is to establish faith in each Christian's heart that will lead him into God's salvation. The gospel goes out first to the Jew and then to the Gentiles.

John 1: 1, 14 (NIV) - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (14) The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. Jesus is the incarnate word of God sent from God to save and restore mankind.

An even deeper and more meaning revelation of this scripture is realize that Jesus is the incarnate God - Matthew 1:23 (KJV) - Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Without a doubt, as Moses was blessing Joseph in Deuteronomy 33:17, he was seeing Jesus as the firstborn bull with horns (the testimony of God) like a wild ox (indiscriminately bringing salvation). Meaning, the Word of God goes forth changing lives of whosoever would believe.

Revelation 22:17 (NIV) - The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.

Deuteronomy 33:17 (Con't) - "Ends of the Earth" - (Joseph's Blessing con't.)

Foreshadow: Jesus' future victorious battles through the church against satan and the nations that follow after him at the end of the Seven Year Tribulation (The Battle of Armageddon) and at the end of the millennium era.

"Ends" - (Strong's Concordance - Hebrew) #657 is taken from the Hebrew word "ephec" which means cessation. "Ephec" is derived from the Hebrew root word "aphec" which means to cease, brought to naught or fail.

The phrase "ends of the earth" in this scripture in no way implies an end to the planet; end of a measurement of land or a measurement of distance, as some scholars have interpreted. "Ends of the earth" definitely is a prophetic statement of time when Christ will defeat the earthly nations that follow after satan, bringing an end to this generation of time and then to begin the next generation of time (millennium reign).

Christ's triumphant march against the nations of the earth will occur at the last bowl of wrath accompanied by the bride of Christ (Gentiles and Jews) for the final war between the saints and the powers of darkness -

Revelation 19:15 (NIV) - Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations......

He will overcome them by the sword (Word) of his mouth. This is the final separation between the righteous and unrighteous people of the earth during this era of time.

But, the final separation for all of time eternally is performed at the end of the millennium period which is the end of the earth as we know it.

Note: When Jacob and Moses were blessing Joseph they could not have been thinking of Joseph in the natural sense because Joseph is not alive at the time of the "ends of the earth". This is a prophetic phrase and is related to the person of Christ only. Joseph is a foreshadow of Christ.

Revelation 20: 7-9 (NIV) - When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth - Gog and Magog - to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God's people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them.

At the end of the Millennium reign there will come a final tribulation that will separate those who would follow after the temptations and deceptions of satan from those who love and follow Christ. Those who deny Christ will be devoured by fire from heaven. This is the final separation between the righteous and unrighteous before God re-creates the earth and heaven.

The war at the "ends of the earth" (end of the millennium) like the war at the end of the Seven Year Tribulation, is centered on a battle that is the result of satan leading his followers against the people of the city of God. Satan is attempting to overcome God by destroying God's people. But, Christ has all power and authority in the earth and in heaven - Matthew 28:18.

Return of Christ 1Revelation 19: 11-14 (NIV) - I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire and on this head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean.

Christ judges and makes war. If one passes the end time Judgment Seat of Christ he will be with Christ to make war against the nations. If one doe not pass judgment, he will remain on the earth to face Christ and the armies of heaven (Christians).

The judgment seat of Christ is not associated with the white throne judgment at the end of the millennium. The judgment seat of Christ is associated with judgment in the heart of man as he either accepts the testimony of Christ and takes it to heart or he denies the Word. As man hears the Word and takes it to heart and applies it to his life, sanctification takes place which transforms his mindset. This is the man whose name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life and he can stand before Christ confidently, not in fear of judgment.

First there is the Judgment Seat of Christ to separate those who are followers of Christ from those who are not. Then at the end of the millennium the white throne judgment is one of sentencing those whose names are not in the Lamb's Book of Life to the lake of fire.

If one's name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life then he will not be thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:15) that is reserved for those who missed the first resurrection. For those who are a part of the first resurrection, the second death will have no power over them (Revelation 20:6). Therefore, if one is a part of the first resurrection, then judgment has already been passed because his name was written in the Lamb's Book of Life prior to the white throne judgment. He was judged as righteous in God's sight.

As one hears the testimony of Christ and decides to follow after Christ, war will be waged between the old sin nature and the believer's new way of thinking. This conflict will be settled by God through the power of the Holy Spirit which enables the believer to renew his mindset, stand firm and hold fast to the promises of God contained in the gospel. The goring of the Word of God will be seen as successful.

The Word of God judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).

Deuteronomy 33:17 (Con't) -"Such are" -

(17) In majesty he is like a firstborn bull; his horns are the horns of a wild ox. With them he will gore the nations even those at the ends of the earth. Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim; such are the thousands of Manasseh."

Ephraim and Manasseh are like Joseph (Christ). Ephraim and Manasseh foreshadow the body of Christ because the words "such are" equate Ephraim (Gentiles) and Manasseh (Jews) with Joseph's (Jesus') majesty and authority.

Foreshadow: The church (Gentiles and Messianic Jews) are like Christ. In the same way as Jesus held majesty over darkness when preaching the good news (the Word of God), the church is given all authority for the ministry of the Word. When the Word is sown by the church, goring takes place as the Word is sharper than a double edged sword dividing soul and spirit and judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). The church is given authority (the same authority as Christ had while he was on the earth) to represent him in the ministry of the gospel.

The time for the final separation of this age is completed near the end of the seven-year tribulation -

Angel with ScrollRevelation 10: 7 (NIV) - But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets."

What is this mystery?

Ephesians 3:6 (NIV) - This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles (Ephraim) are heirs together with Israel (Manasseh), members together of one body (body of Christ), and shares together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

The ministry of the gospel is brought to a close just prior to the sounding of the seventh trumpet, which inaugurates the time of God's wrath upon the earth.

Both Jacob's and Moses' blessings spoken over Joseph parallel each other and foreshadow God's agenda for building His family through Christ Jesus. Of course, the work of God through Christ is revealed throughout the Bible, but there are some things that can only be understood through foreshadows structured by Hebrew and Greek word definitions. These things are hidden manna of the Bible and available only to those who seek a more in-depth knowledge of the scriptures.

Summary

The Old Testament account of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh reveals a foreshadow of God's agenda for uniting Jew and Gentile into one body (Body of Christ) as heirs of God to the Abrahamic Covenant promise; that all peoples are blessed when they accept Jesus Christ as the Son of God under His blood, shed for the forgiveness of sin.

Revealed through Ephraim, as the prophetic firstborn, the church is first judged by God and taken into heaven. Thus, Ephraim is put ahead of Manasseh for spiritual blessing. Ephraim is not on the earth when the 144,000 are sealed by God at the beginning of the seven year tribulation. (See Spiritual Inheritance of Ephraim)

Until that day arrives, the church (Ephraim) has been given all authority to be a witness of the grace of God to a world of darkness. It is the responsibility of the Christian to be a working member of the body of Christ so the ministry of the gospel can be fulfilled.

Mark 16:15 (NIV) - He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.

Luke 10: 17-20 (NIV) - The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." (18) He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. (19) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. (20) However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

The church, in the same manner as Joseph has; "majesty like a firstborn bull", their horns are the horns of a wild ox. With these horns they will "gore the nations, even those at the ends of the earth" with the Word of God.

Those who claim Christianity (to be Christ like) must realize who they are in Christ and to understand God's will for their lives - to follow Christ and to tell others the goodness of God is for them also. Each Christian is should be of good courage and set an example of faith and devotion.

There is a special reward for those who serve God through Christ.

Malachi 3:17-18 (NIV) - "They will be mine," says the LORD Almighty, "in the day when I make up my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him. (18) And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.

The foreshadow of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh brings to light the wondrous prophetic nature of God's Word. Prophecy is divine evidence of God's having authored the Bible. No other book of religion has a prophetic characteristic like that of the Bible. Do not be swayed by any other book which does not reveal God's agenda for mankind. Jehovah is a God of inclusion not exclusion, providing the door to salvation to any man who would open it by faith in Christ's testimony, regardless of his current belief system. Salvation through Messiah is open to Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Agnostics, Atheists and even satanists. All are reconciled to God through Christ! No one is excluded! God is love and love never fails, never excludes.

Jesus Knocking on doorChrist knocks on the door of each man's heart through His preached Word. If man responds to His invitation to accept Him as Savior and Lord, he opens the door for Christ to come in. I encourage everyone to respond to His gospel invitation with a heart felt yes!

However, let no man believe that God is not a God of justice. God judges and separates those who follow after false gods from those who follow after Him. He is preparing for Himself a Holy Priesthood, a church without spot. Do not hesitate, for the time is nearing for this final separation to take place.

See For the Eyes of Your Understanding - Volume 4 for study that reveals the time for the season for closing out the "times of the Gentiles'.

Be a part of what God is doing in the earth through the ministry of the good news to those who sit in darkness and are led astray by vain imaginations and philosophies of men who claim to be sent by God. God has sent us the Messiah and he left us with all that we need to become the people that God desires us to be. Christ left us with the testimony of God and He poured out the Holy Spirit upon all mankind at Pentecost. This is all we need to internalize the Word of God and to have the faith that puts us in the will of God for our lives. We, the church, have the authority to rule and overcome all the power of darkness. God has predestined the church to be His counterpart in the earth, while Christ sits in heaven at the right hand of God.

May God bless you in your efforts to participate in the ministry of the gospel to those who sit in darkness.
